Hi Brandon! I would actually say it isn't all about writing the posts. Some blogging teams split the load in different ways.

For instance, on our Unreality TV website, most of the blogging is done by my wife, while I look after the maintenance and promotion of the site. I also gave her some coaching in the best ways to optimize her content for search engines. In that respect, the teamwork is divided according to skill areas.

Profit sharing agreements will always be tricky on a blog. We always assume the team is passionate about their subject matter. If this is the case, everybody will contribute their part.

However, it may be that circumstances change and a member of your team drifts or becomes less productive. This needs to be agreed up-front. Who owns copyright on that individual's posts? Should they be removed (to the detriment of your visitors)? Should they be bought out?

To answer your question directly, unless you have a 'star' blogger who really puts in the effort not only writing posts, but building traffic, commenting on other blogs, you'll want to share profits equally. If you do have one star performer, I'd advise increasing their share to keep them motivated.

I certainly think basing your profit-sharing purely on post output is too simplistic.

Hope that helps!

Great tips! Any ideas on how profit should be split?

What if one person writes 10 quality posts, another 8 posts, and another writes 25 posts...how should the profit be divided?

Thanks!

The way I approached it, since my co-blogger and I knew we would have creative differences at some point, is just giving him another subdomain of mine to work with. I get the benefits of linking to him when he does say something interesting, people are one click away, and we can by and large share a readership in common while not ticking each other off too much, since we don't have to look at each other's sites if we don't want to. :)
